Despite my initial intentions, as previously shared in the Newburyport Daily News, I have made the difficult decision not to return my nomination papers to seek another term as Ward 2 City Councilor.
After careful reflection and many conversations with family and supporters, I believe this is the right time to step back and refocus my efforts on disability advocacy and awareness — work that is deeply meaningful to me. I also wish to be fully present for my son as he enters high school this fall, so I do not miss the important moments ahead.
I am proud of what we have accomplished together over the past four years. A few key milestones include maximizing affordable senior housing at the Brown School, securing the purchase of the Low Street property and supporting the debt exclusion vote to create a permanent home for Newburyport Recreation and Youth Services. I also added my voice to advancing the Market Landing expansion project and prioritizing improvements to streets and sidewalks — all achievements I will always stand by. Throughout my term, I worked to ensure my voice on the Council supported sound, fiscally responsible policies while consistently advocating for marginalized residents. Equally important to me was remaining approachable and attentive to the needs of Ward 2 residents — a responsibility I took seriously every day.
I am especially proud to have raised awareness among my colleagues about being mindful of the experiences and needs of people with disabilities, including those with no or low vision, and to have contributed to improving how Council packets are prepared so they are easier to navigate with screen readers and audio tools, helping more residents access and understand our work.
Nothing I accomplished could have been done without working with some truly fabulous people, including my colleagues on the Council, staff in the Clerk’s Office, and city staff. Of all the experiences I’ve had as a Councilor, I can say that the positives far outweigh the negatives. We are fortunate to be served by so many dedicated individuals who give their whole hearts, often without much recognition. I want to thank not only my colleagues but everyone who has helped me along the way — I appreciate each and every one of you.
I have great faith in the democratic process and trust that the voters of Ward 2 will choose the person who best represents their values and priorities.
Thank you, Ward 2, for your trust, support, and belief in me. It has truly been a privilege to serve you.
